Ter Stegen Completes Girona Loan After Barcelona Exit
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has joined Girona on loan until the end of the season after bidding
farewell to his Barcelona teammates on Monday.
The German international opted for regular football to protect his place as the national team’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the World Cup.
Ter Stegen had fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona following the rise of Joan Garcia and the club’s trust in Wojciech Szczesny, leaving the former captain with little choice but to seek a temporary exit.
Despite initial hesitation about joining a side battling relegation, the importance of consistent
minutes convinced Ter Stegen to accept the move after weeks of negotiations.
Girona described the 31-year-old as a modern, all-round goalkeeper, praising his footwork,
composure, positioning and leadership qualities.
Barcelona paid tribute to his 11-and-a-half-year spell at the club, where he made 423
appearances and won multiple major honours, though they will continue to cover a large portion of his salary.
