BARCELONA COMPLETE €80M SIGNING OF ANTHONY GORDON FROM NEWCASTLE
FC Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United FC for a reported €80 million (£69m), with the England winger signing a five-year contract.
Gordon arrives in Spain after an impressive spell at Newcastle, where he scored 39 goals and provided 28 assists in 152 appearances. He also helped the Magpies qualify for the Champions League twice and win the EFL Cup, ending the club’s 50-year wait for major silverware.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a strong European campaign last season, contributing 10 goals and two assists in the Champions League.
Speaking at his unveiling, Gordon surprised reporters by addressing part of his press conference in Spanish.
“I was excited to play for Barca since I was three years of age,” he said. “One day I’ll play for Barca, so I want to learn Spanish.”
Gordon also expressed his excitement about playing alongside stars such as Lamine Yamal.
“To play with Lamine and the rest of the players is very exciting for me. These players are at the very top level for a reason, they’re the best players in the world.”
His arrival could cast further doubt over the future of Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona but is yet to complete a permanent move.
