Vintage Djokovic Ends Sinner’s Reign in Melbourne to Reach Australian OpenFinal
Novak Djokovic rolled back the years to end Jannik Sinner’s title defense and book his
place in the Australian Open final with a five-set victory on Friday night.
The 38-year-old overcame the double defending champion in a gripping semi-final,
moving to within one win of a record 25th Grand Slam title and a first major crown since
September 2023.
Djokovic brushed aside talk of fortune after earlier walkovers, insisting there was
nothing accidental about his display.
“I came out with great clarity about the strategy and game plan that needed to be
executed,” he said. “I’m just thrilled to be able to experience something like this tonight.”
The contest finished well into the early hours, leaving Djokovic little time to recover
before Sunday’s final against Carlos Alcaraz.
“It’s almost 3am. I cannot make any predictions right now,” he admitted. “I’m just going
to use every hour I can to recover.”
Sinner, whose long unbeaten run at Melbourne Park came to an end, acknowledged the
quality of Djokovic’s performance.
“He’s won 24 Grand Slams. I’m never surprised by his level,” the Italian said. “He played
great tennis and deserves a lot of credit.”
Djokovic will now face Alcaraz with history on the line in Sunday’s final.
