Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has been honoured by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) in recognition of her contributions to girl-child education, hygiene promotion, and maternal and child health.

The recognition was presented during the 29th and 30th Ordinary General Assemblies of OAFLAD held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It also acknowledged her efforts toward reducing maternal and child mortality and improving the welfare of mothers and children across Nigeria.

The First Lady, who was represented at the event by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, received the honour on her behalf.

OAFLAD, through its “We Are Equal” campaign, has remained at the forefront of championing gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and access to education across Africa.

In a statement issued by Kwapchi Bata Hamman, Special Assistant to the President on Media and ICT, the assembly underscored the need for stronger collaboration among African nations to tackle challenges facing women and children, especially in conflict-affected regions.

Notable speakers at the event included Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone and Chairperson of the forum, and Lordina Mahama, First Lady of Ghana. Both commended Senator Tinubu’s sustained advocacy for women and children, as well as her role in advancing initiatives that promote gender equity and social welfare.

Speaking on the mission of OAFLAD, Dr. Bio highlighted the connection between sustainable development and peace, noting that women’s rights cannot be fully realised in unstable environments. Mrs. Mahama also emphasised the importance of investing in girl-child education and supporting women artisans to build sustainable livelihoods across the continent.
