INEC Denies Chairman’s Alleged Partisan Post, Warns of Fake Accounts
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted claims that its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, endorsed a partisan message on social media, describing the allegation as fabricated and part of a coordinated attempt to undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral body.
In a statement issued on Friday by the chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, the commission dismissed the report as “false and misleading,” insisting that the INEC boss neither operates a personal account on X nor engages in political commentary.
According to the commission, the viral claim is a deliberate effort to erode public trust in its neutrality at a sensitive period in the country’s political cycle, as preparations gradually build towards the 2027 general elections.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the INEC Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X and has never associated himself with partisan activity,” the statement said, warning that the alleged post was a “figment of imagination” designed to distract the commission from its constitutional responsibilities.
INEC also raised alarm over increasing cases of impersonation and cyber fraud involving fake social media accounts created in the chairman’s name. The commission said such accounts have been used to deceive unsuspecting Nigerians, prompting collaboration with security agencies to track and prosecute those responsible.
The development comes amid heightened political tension and scrutiny of electoral institutions, particularly following recent controversies involving party leadership disputes and court rulings affecting opposition parties. Analysts note that misinformation campaigns targeting electoral bodies could further deepen public distrust if not swiftly addressed.
The commission reiterated that all official communications would continue to be disseminated through its verified platforms and urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing.
Despite the controversy, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting transparent and credible elections, stressing that attempts to discredit its leadership would not derail its mandate.
