South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has addressed increasing diplomatic strains amid reports that members of the Nigerian Senate have threatened to withdraw support from MTN and other South African businesses in Nigeria.

Ramaphosa asserted that South Africans do not possess an inherent animosity toward foreigners, highlighting the nation’s legacy of unity and coexistence.

“South Africans have always embraced people from other nations. We consider ourselves one community,” he stated.

He also pointed out the importance of ensuring the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa while acknowledging the genuine concerns of local citizens.

“We must prioritize the security of those from abroad residing in South Africa, while also listening to the issues raised by our own people,” he remarked.

Additionally, Ramaphosa mentioned discussions with Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera, emphasizing the necessity for collaboration among affected nations.

“This isn’t just a matter for one country; all nations with citizens in South Africa are impacted. Therefore, we must unite to develop solutions to these challenges,” he explained.

He called for enhanced regional cooperation, urging all parties involved to collaborate in seeking effective and lasting resolutions.
