FG APPROVES MAJOR SPORTS FACILITY OVERHAUL ACROSS NIGERIA.
The Federal Government has approved a sweeping sports infrastructure
redevelopment programme, headlined by a major overhaul of the Moshood Abiola
National Stadium as part of efforts to restore facilities across the country to
international standards.
The plan includes a full rehabilitation of the stadium pitch, upgrades to tartan tracks,
dressing rooms, media and VIP sections, security systems, floodlights and the
introduction of VAR technology and electronic advertising boards.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the initiative
as a turning point for Nigerian sports.
“These projects represent a bold step towards restoring Nigeria’s sporting glory and
creating sustainable opportunities for future generations,” Dikko said.
NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade added that the plan goes beyond
infrastructure alone.
“This is beyond infrastructure renewal; it is about building a complete sports
ecosystem that supports talent discovery, athlete development, job creation, and
global competitiveness,” he said.
Other approvals include a High Performance Centre, new training pitches, swimming
pool rehabilitation, and conversion of the athletes’ hostel into a hotel complex.
Beyond Abuja, work is also ongoing at the National Stadium in Lagos, the Obafemi
Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, and the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, alongside
plans for new mini stadiums and sports centres across communities nationwide.
