ZVEREV ENDS GRAND SLAM HOODOO WITH EPIC FRENCH OPEN TRIUMPH.
Alexander Zverev finally captured his first Grand Slam title after defeating Flavio
Cobolli in a thrilling five-set French Open final, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 in
Paris.
The German made a dominant start, racing through the opening set before Cobolli
responded strongly to level the contest. Zverev regained the advantage by taking the
third set, only for the resilient Italian to force a decider after edging a tense fourth set
tiebreak.
With the pressure at its highest and memories of previous Grand Slam final defeats
lingering, Zverev produced his best tennis in the deciding set, breaking early and
never looking back.
The world number three powered to victory in the fifth set to end years of heartbreak
on the biggest stage and finally secure the maiden major title that had long eluded
him.
For Cobolli, it was a brave effort in his first Grand Slam final, but it was Zverev who
held his nerve when it mattered most to claim the French Open crown.
