Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has responded to critics who suggested he should retire from music because of his age, insisting that he is far from done.

The backlash began after an X user, @OloriOfOloris, reacted to a clip from one of Mr P’s music videos, claiming that the singer, who the user described as “almost 50,” should no longer be making Afrobeats music.

Media personality Do2dtun quickly defended the former P-Square star, describing the comment as ageist. He pointed out that global music icons such as Celine Dion, Shakira, Beyoncé, and members of the Backstreet Boys are all older than Mr P and remain active in the industry.

“Peter is 44, but you dimwits are so ageist that you don’t even know what you bring down in the name of clicks,” Do2dtun wrote.

Responding to the controversy, Mr P argued that many of those calling for his retirement are simply “heartbroken fans” of the now-defunct P-Square group. He accused critics of applying double standards by celebrating international stars like Usher, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown for continuing to perform while questioning his own career.

The singer also highlighted his versatility, saying he remains one of the few entertainers who combines singing, dancing, high-energy performances, and the ability to play multiple musical instruments.

“Put some respect on the name Peter Okoye, aka Mr P,” he wrote. “Most of these people are P-Square heartbroken fans, and honestly, I understand their feelings. Nothing lasts forever. Change is constant. Respect our decision and move on.”

Mr P further described his solo career as one of the best decisions he has ever made, adding that he is unconcerned about public opinion.

“As for this solo journey, it’s one of the best things that has ever happened in my life, and I honestly don’t care what anyone thinks,” he said.

In a major career update, the singer revealed that he recently signed a five-year, multi-million-dollar agreement with an international distribution company. According to him, the deal covers the release of three albums.

“I recently signed a multi-million-dollar five-year deal with an international distribution company covering three albums. Nobody can stop this movement. The train has left the station. It’s Mr P forever,” he added.

Mr P and his twin brother, Paul Okoye, rose to fame as the iconic music duo P-Square before officially parting ways in 2017 following years of internal disagreements. Both brothers have since pursued separate solo careers.
