Kenneth Okonkwo Releases Alleged Evidence in Bribery Row With Peter Obi
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Okonkwo, has released what he described as evidence to support allegations of bribery involving the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peter Obi.
Okonkwo had earlier alleged that Obi and some NDC leaders in the South-East collected ₦10 million from House of Representatives aspirants and ₦20 million from senatorial aspirants seeking the party’s tickets.
He further claimed that one of the aspirants, Obunike Ohaegbu, provided him with details of the alleged payments, including a receipt which he cited as part of the evidence supporting his claims.
The allegations have since escalated into a legal dispute.
In response, Obi, through a letter dated June 9, 2026, issued by his legal team led by Alex Ejesieme, demanded ₦5 billion in damages and a public apology from Okonkwo.
The former Anambra governor’s lawyers described the allegations as defamatory and warned that legal proceedings would follow if the demands were not met.
The letter also indicated that Obi could seek even higher damages should the matter proceed to court.
The controversy has added a new dimension to political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with both camps maintaining opposing positions over the claims.
As of the time of filing this report, no court had ruled on the authenticity of the alleged evidence released by Okonkwo, while Obi continues to deny wrongdoing through his legal representatives.
