EGYPT SHOW WORLD CUP AMBITION IN IMPRESSIVE DRAW WITH BELGIUM
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan insisted the Pharaohs are not at the World Cup to make up the numbers after their impressive 1-1 draw against Belgium in Group G on Monday.
Egypt looked on course for a famous victory in Seattle after Emam Ashour fired them ahead in the 20th minute, but Belgium rescued a point when Romelu Lukaku’s introduction led to an own goal from Mohamed Hany in the second half.
Despite missing out on victory, Hassan was encouraged by his side’s display against one of the tournament favourites.
“We are definitely not here just to make up the numbers,” Hassan said. “The win was in our hands today.”
The Egypt coach praised the quality within his squad, highlighting captain Mohamed Salah and forward Omar Marmoush.
“The players are top quality, and we have two of the best players in the world with us. They give us motivation,” he said.
Egypt registered 14 goal attempts and matched Belgium for long periods, leaving Hassan satisfied with the performance.
“The draw is a win, actually, a draw against such a rival, a big rival. They have big, big players,” he added.
Hassan also defended his decision to substitute Salah late in the game, stressing that the team comes before any individual.
“We do not rely on a single player but on a collective 26,” he said. “Salah and Marmoush gave everything for the team.”
Egypt now turn their attention to crucial Group G matches against New Zealand and Iran as they bid to reach the knockout stage for the first time.
