mexico edge south korea 1 0 become first team to qualify for fifa world cup knockout stage

Mexico became one of the first teams to book their place in the World Cup Round of 32 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in Guadalajara.

In a closely contested match, clear chances were limited during a quiet first half.

Mexico came closest when Julian Quinones’ header was well saved by Kim Seung-Gyu, while South Korea struggled to create meaningful opportunities despite enjoying spells of possession.

The decisive moment arrived shortly after halftime when goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu made a costly error, dropping a routine aerial ball inside the box.

Luis Romo reacted quickest and calmly lifted the ball into an empty net to hand the hosts the lead.

South Korea offered little response for much of the second half before finally increasing the pressure in the closing stages.

However, Raul Rangel produced an important save to deny Cho Gue-Sung and preserve Mexico’s advantage.

The victory secures Mexico’s place in the knockout stage and marks the first time they have won three consecutive World Cup matches.

South Korea, meanwhile, must now avoid defeat in their final group game against South Africa to keep their qualification hopes alive.
