Governor Mohammed Calls for Economic Policy Changes, Urges Tinubu to Listen to the Masses

December 27, 2024

The Governor of Bauchi State has called on President Bola Tinubu to make changes to current economic policies, saying they are not widely accepted among the masses.

He made the call during the Christmas Day celebration organised in Bauchi on Thursday.

The governor advised President Tinubu to set aside pride and listen to the suffering masses.

“We are calling on the presidency and the federal government to change their style. Whenever a policy is not popular, they should listen to the people and not be arrogant and think that whatever they say must be. This is not an oligarchy.

“This is not a military rule. They must listen to the people, and that is what makes a good leader, and we pledged to be loyal to them. But anything they are doing that is contrary to that; they are calling for anarchy. They are calling for intransigency, and it is unacceptable.

“There is a lot of wahala. We must work together across party lines, across all the tiers of government to provide succor and solace to the Nigerian people. It is not about pride or ego because whatever it is; the situation was not like this before.

“ If the situation was bad before I came, tell me and I must change. And the presidency must also listen,” he added.

He also called on Christians across the country to pray for Nigeria due to the current hardship.

He said, “We join our Christian brothers to celebrate this day, the birthday of Jesus Christ. And we use this opportunity as the government of Bauchi State, to thank the people, to thank the Christians for their support over the years, especially for my dear party, the PDP and my humble self.

“Even when I was in ANPP, the Christians helped me and voted for me, and they voted for me despite my limitations and my gaps.

“I appreciate your support all through, even when we came for the second term. You deserve our appreciation because you have earned it.

“You are my brothers and sisters because I am a special breed of person. Most of you are my tribesmen.

“We come from the same source, we only believe differently. You are free to practice your religion. I am free to practice my religion. There is no compulsion in religion.

“I call on you to pray for Nigeria. Pray for all the leaders of Nigeria, including my humble self because Nigeria needs prayers. We are facing a lot of difficulties. There is a lot of wahala. There is a lot of anger, and it is something that we have to pray for God to obliterate it. We have to say it but certainly, it is not to insult anybody,” he said.

Gov Mohammed’s plea comes following several economic policies by the Bola Tinubu’s administration which have forced hardship on the masses.

Tinubu Mourns Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound condolences to the government and people of India following the death of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

In a statement released by the State House on Friday and signed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu described Singh as a visionary leader whose contributions to Nigeria-India relations were significant.

Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extends heartfelt condolences to the government and people of India on the passing of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

“Singh, India’s Prime Minister between 2004 and 2014, died Thursday at the age of 92.

“Prime Minister Singh’s official visit to Nigeria in 2007 was historic. He earned the distinct honour of addressing a joint session of the National Assembly, a privilege accorded to only a few global leaders.

“President Tinubu pays tribute to Dr Singh’s dedication to strengthening the Nigeria-India relationship, noting that his diplomatic efforts remain a reference point in the history of the bilateral relations between the two nations.

“The President recounts the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between Nigeria and India under Singh’s tenure, which has continued to flourish, driving political and economic prosperity for both countries.

“President Tinubu further lauds Prime Minister Singh’s efforts to forge improved cooperation in defence trade, culture, education, health, science and technology, and ICT.

“Expressing gratitude to the people of India for celebrating the life and accomplishments of this selfless leader and distinguished economist, the Nigerian leader salutes Singh’s role in steering India’s economic reforms during globally challenging times.

“He prays that the departed Prime Minister’s dedication to service will inspire the people of India.”
