Elder statesman and former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, has lauded Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his leadership and resilience in preventing the state from being turned into the personal domain of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking at an event organized by the Odili family to honor Governor Fubara in Port Harcourt on Friday, Dr. Odili commended the Rivers governor for his fortitude in confronting challenges and ensuring stability in the state.
The event, which took place in the Rivers State capital, saw prominent figures in attendance. In a statement issued on Saturday by Nelson Chukwudi, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Fubara, Odili reflected on the political crisis that has gripped the state since October 2023.
Odili noted that a “fierce and unnecessary existential fight” had been launched against Fubara over the soul of the state. Despite this, he praised the governor for standing firm, thwarting what he described as a singular quest to “capture the state as a private estate,” and restoring happiness among civil servants and citizens.
“With assuring fortitude, Governor Fubara confronted the challenge, prevented the quest by one man to capture the state as a private estate, emancipated Rivers people, steadied governance, and made civil servants and Rivers people happier, just as it used to be during my tenure,” Odili was quoted as saying.
Justice Mary Odili (retired), a former Justice of the Supreme Court and wife of the elder statesman, also pledged her family’s unwavering support for Fubara’s administration.
The event came amid a protracted political rivalry between Fubara and Wike, who served as Rivers governor from 2015 to 2023. The two have been locked in a supremacy battle since December 2023, with tensions escalating in April 2024 when Odili publicly declared Fubara as the state’s political leader. Wike later revealed that his relationship with Odili had deteriorated due to political differences, despite previously describing him as a mentor.
Speaking at the event, Governor Fubara credited his strength and resolve to the collective support of Rivers people. He expressed gratitude to his supporters and reiterated his commitment to serving the state with humility and accountability.
“My strength is drawn from every one of you here. You encouraged me, you do the work for me, and you make the calls for me. So, why won’t I stand up for you?” Fubara said.
The governor assured attendees that his administration would continue to prioritize good governance, emphasizing that leadership is a temporary responsibility.
“We believe strongly that the ultimate game changer and liberator is God Almighty. Because we have Him on our side, victory is assured,” he added.
The event underscored a turning point in Rivers politics, with Fubara consolidating his position as a leader committed to the welfare of the state amidst the ongoing political tensions.
