American McCartney Kessler claimed her second WTA title on Saturday, defeating Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 in the Hobart International final.
Kessler, ranked 67th in the world, showcased an aggressive game with 44 winners to overcome Mertens, a two-time Hobart champion.
Despite dropping the second set, the 25-year-old dominated the decider, sealing victory in just over two hours.
The win provides a confidence boost for Kessler, who will face China’s Zhang Shuai in the Australian Open first round. Mertens, a former Australian Open semi-finalist, is set to meet Swiss player Viktorija Golubic in her Melbourne Park opener.
