President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly intervened in the leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly, pressuring lawmakers to reinstate Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker just three weeks after his impeachment. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that Tinubu, concerned about potential political repercussions, urged legislators to reverse their decision, assuring them that Obasa would step down voluntarily after a brief period.

Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, followed allegations of misappropriating billions in public funds. His removal led to the appointment of Lasbat Mojisola Meranda as Speaker, with overwhelming support from 32 out of the 40 Assembly members. However, despite his removal, Obasa has refused to vacate the Speaker’s official residence, further intensifying political tensions in the state.

Sources also suggest that First Lady Remi Tinubu played a role in shaping the President’s stance. While she reportedly intervened to prevent the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from arresting Obasa, she did not oppose an ongoing corruption probe against him. The development has deepened divisions within Lagos’ political circles, with some lawmakers reluctant to oppose Tinubu’s directive given his influence over the state’s politics.

Meanwhile, Obasa has reportedly met with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to discuss the terms of his return. The meeting, held behind closed doors, is believed to have set the stage for his reinstatement, which could happen as early as next week. Despite growing speculation, both Obasa and Meranda have remained silent on the matter, while a presidential spokesperson denied any knowledge of the alleged directive.

Obasa’s potential return is seen as a major test for the Assembly, as lawmakers must navigate the delicate balance between party loyalty and public accountability. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the unfolding situation could have significant implications for Lagos’ political landscape, reinforcing Tinubu’s dominance while raising concerns over executive influence in legislative affairs.
