In a poignant message aimed at fostering respect and unity among citizens, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has issued a stern warning against the increasing trend of online bullying directed at public officials.

“Stop Online Bullying, Respect Your Leaders and Yours,” she declared, highlighting the disparity between the treatment of Nigerian leaders at home and abroad. While these leaders enjoy respect and honor internationally, they often endure relentless ridicule, belittling remarks, and curses on social media, especially following public missteps.

Senator Tinubu emphasized the importance of treating leaders with dignity, arguing that excessive online harassment undermines national progress and unity. “No leader is perfect,” she acknowledged, “but our strength lies in love, unity, mutual respect, and collective effort rather than tearing down our own leaders.”

She urged citizens to actively reject the culture of bullying by not remaining silent or supportive of such behavior. The Senator’s remarks come at a time when the nation grapples with the delicate balance between constructive criticism and abuse aimed at those in power.

As public discourse continues to evolve, critical questions arise: Should respect for leaders be inherent, or must it be earned? Additionally, is holding leaders accountable through constructive criticism still a democratic right, or has it been overshadowed by a culture of personal attacks?

These questions linger as Nigeria navigates the complexities of leadership, accountability, and public sentiment.
