Manchester United have announced ambitious plans to build a new £2bn, 100,000-capacity stadium near Old Trafford, making it the largest in the UK.

The club aims to complete the project within five years, after which Old Trafford—United’s home since 1910—is expected to be demolished.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe described the new stadium as “the world’s greatest football arena,” designed by renowned architects Foster and Partners.

The structure will feature a unique umbrella design and a public plaza twice the size of Trafalgar Square.

Additionally, three towering masts, dubbed “the trident,” will stand 200 meters high and be visible from 25 miles away.

While the club has yet to confirm financing plans, CEO Omar Berrada called it an “attractive investment opportunity.”

Football finance experts believe the revenue from a multi-functional stadium will outweigh additional costs.

The project is set to be part of a wider regeneration of the Old Trafford area, expected to create 92,000 jobs, build 17,000 homes, and generate £7.3bn annually for the UK economy. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has already backed the initiative.

Old Trafford, England’s biggest club ground with a 74,140 capacity, has faced criticism over outdated facilities, including leaks in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand.

The new stadium will be built using pre-fabrication, with materials shipped via the Manchester Ship Canal.

Ratcliffe emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for 115 years, but it has fallen behind. I think we may end up with the most iconic football stadium in the world.”
