Kano Govt Spokesman Alleges Kwankwaso Working Indirectly for Tinubu’s Re-Election
Fresh political controversy has erupted in Kano State after a senior official in the state government alleged that former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso is indirectly aiding President Bola Tinubu’s re-election plans ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The allegation was made on Wednesday by Sunusi Tofa during an appearance on Arise News.
Tofa claimed that recent political alignments and strategic engagements involving Kwankwaso could ultimately strengthen Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term in office.
According to him, political calculations currently unfolding across the country suggest that some opposition figures may be unintentionally or strategically benefiting the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is indirectly or strategically working towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid,” Tofa said during the interview.
He further alleged that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf had approached Tinubu regarding plans to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC, allegedly with Kwankwaso’s approval.
Tofa also claimed the proposed move enjoyed the backing of former Deputy Governor of Kano State Aminu Gwarzo.
The Kano Government House spokesperson did not provide documentary evidence to support the allegations, which have already sparked political debate across the country.
As of the time of filing this report, Kwankwaso had not publicly responded to the claims.
The former governor remains one of the most influential political figures in northern Nigeria and continues to command a large support base through the Kwankwasiyya movement, a political structure known for its loyal grassroots following symbolised by red caps.
Kwankwaso, a former senator and former Minister of Defence, contested the 2023 presidential election on the NNPP platform and secured a strong performance in Kano State, although he finished behind Tinubu nationally.
His political influence was widely credited with helping Governor Yusuf defeat the APC candidate in the 2023 governorship election in Kano.
The relationship between Kwankwaso and the Kano State Government has remained one of the most closely watched political dynamics in Nigeria since the election.
Recent political developments have fuelled speculation about possible alliances and defections ahead of 2027, especially as opposition figures continue consultations over coalition strategies against the APC.
Tofa also commented on former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, suggesting that Kano’s political environment may not easily accommodate Obi’s political movement due to what he described as ideological and regional factors.
In addition, he dismissed reports claiming that millions of supporters recently gathered at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano.
According to him, the figures being circulated were exaggerated and unrealistic.
“Even major public venues in Kano do not have such capacity. Kwankwaso’s residence cannot accommodate more than 2,000 people,” he said.
Political analysts say the remarks reflect growing tension and uncertainty within opposition circles as politicians reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Observers also note that Kano remains strategically important because of its large voting population and influence within northern politics.
With coalition talks, defections and leadership disputes already reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape, analysts expect Kano to remain a major battleground in the run-up to the next presidential election.
