NETHERLANDS STUNNED BY ALGERIA IN WORLD CUP SEND-OFF DEFEAT.
The Netherlands head to the United States for the World Cup on the back of a 1-0
defeat to Algeria in their final send-off match in Rotterdam.
Ronald Koeman handed West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville his debut, while
Mats Wieffer stepped in for the suspended Denzel Dumfries, but Oranje were left
frustrated in front of the goal despite a dominant display for long spells.
Donyell Malen struck the post early on, while Summerville and Tijjani Reijnders saw
a goal ruled out for offside as the hosts created several openings without reward.
Algeria weathered the pressure and struck late on through Anis Hadj Moussa, who
fired into the top corner in the 82 nd minute to silence De Kuip.
Memphis Depay and Justin Kluivert both went close as the Netherlands pushed for
an equaliser, but Luca Zidane produced a string of saves to secure victory for the
visitors.
Koeman’s side now travels to the USA ahead of the tournament, with one final
behind-closed-doors friendly against Uzbekistan to come.
