Nigeria has secured a historic 2,600-megawatt solar module supply agreement with LONGi Solar France SARL, setting the stage for one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest solar energy projects. The deal, signed under the supervision of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology will power the country’s Green Hydrogen Hub Project to be sited at the Liberty Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone, Akwa Ibom State.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji portrayed the agreement as a major milestone in Nigeria’s clean energy ambitions. The project is expected to deliver over 20,000 direct jobs across engineering, logistics and research while placing Nigeria as a key player in the global green energy transition.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria stated that deploying LONGi’s high-efficiency modules will maximise energy yields under Nigeria’s climate conditions. The project, beyond energy generation will produce 500 metric tonnes of Green Medical Oxygen daily, thereby supporting Nigeria’s healthcare system.

This venture not only aims to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on fossil fuels but also aligns with efforts to boost industrial development, hydrogen exports and sustainable transportation, signifying a major milestone towards economic diversification and energy security.
