Brazil Sack Dorival Junior After Heavy Defeat to Argentina

Brazil have parted ways with head coach Dorival Junior following a crushing 4-1 loss to Argentina in World Cup qualifying.

The defeat proved to be the final straw for the 62-year-old, who had been in charge of the national team since January 2024.

Despite sitting fourth in the South American qualification standings and remaining on course for the 2026 World Cup, Brazil’s inconsistent form of five defeats in 14 games prompted the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to make a change.

“The board wishes him success in his continued career. From now on, the CBF will work to find a replacement,” the federation said in a brief statement.

Dorival, who previously led Flamengo to Copa Libertadores glory in 2022, won seven, drew six, and lost three of his 16 matches in charge.

His tenure began with a 1-0 victory over England at Wembley but failed to deliver the consistency expected from the five-time world champions.

Reports suggest Al-Hilal manager Jorge Jesus is a leading candidate for the role, while Brazil remain interested in Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, whom they previously attempted to appoint.
