Liverpool have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a potential move for German star Florian Wirtz, as Arne Slot begins shaping his squad for the Premier League champions’ title defence.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is now considered a top target at Anfield, with Liverpool registering their interest in Wirtz during discussions to sign his Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong.
Formal negotiations are yet to begin, but Liverpool are expected to step things up soon. Leverkusen value Wirtz at over £120 million, a figure that would smash the British transfer record set by Chelsea’s £107m deal for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Whether Liverpool will meet that valuation remains unclear, but the Reds have been encouraged by growing belief that Wirtz favours a move to Anfield over Bayern Munich.
Wirtz, one of Europe’s most exciting young talents, has been instrumental for Leverkusen and will feature for Germany at the Euros this summer, potentially driving his price even higher.
