Yassine Bounou’s dramatic stoppage-time penalty save earned Al Hilal a deserved 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in their Group H opener at the FIFA Club World Cup in Miami, ending Los Blancos’ perfect record against Saudi opposition.

It was a night of firsts at the Hard Rock Stadium, with Xabi Alonso making his managerial debut for Real, while Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold featured for the first time in the famous white shirt.

On the opposite bench, Simone Inzaghi took charge of Al Hilal for the first time after his summer appointment.

Al Hilal started brightly and created several chances, including a close-range miss from Marcos Leonardo and a disallowed goal by Renan Lodi.

But it was Madrid who struck first, with Gonzalo Garcia finishing off a swift counterattack just before the break.

The Saudi champions responded immediately, as Ruben Neves calmly converted a penalty after Raul Asencio fouled Leonardo in the box.

Madrid pushed hard in the second half, with Arda Guler hitting the crossbar and Garcia denied by Bounou.

In the dying minutes, they were awarded a penalty after a VAR check for handball, but Bounou stood tall to save Federico Valverde’s effort, sealing a point for Al Hilal.
