Benfica’s Club World Cup clash with Auckland City was suspended at halftime due to adverse weather in Orlando, marking the fourth weather-related stoppage of the tournament.
The Portuguese side were 1-0 up thanks to an Ángel Di María penalty before the match was paused, with lightning in the area prompting officials to act in line with US safety regulations.
It follows a string of delays earlier in the week. Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD saw their match delayed before kick-off on Tuesday, while Salzburg’s meeting with Pachuca was halted for 97 minutes on Wednesday.
Thursday’s Palmeiras vs Al Ahly encounter also saw a 45-minute pause due to a nearby storm.
US protocols require a minimum 30-minute delay for any outdoor event if lightning is detected or thunder is heard.
