Chelsea responded emphatically to their loss against Flamengo by beating Espérance de Tunis 3-0 at Lincoln Financial Field to secure a place in the FIFA Club World Cup last 16.
On the hottest day in Philadelphia since 1994, both sides initially struggled with the heat and each other’s compact defences.
But Chelsea broke through in first-half stoppage time when Tosin Adarabioyo nodded in unmarked from a corner.
Moments later, Liam Delap added a superb second, showing strength and composure to score his first goal for the club.
Espérance, having rarely been involved in high-scoring games, never recovered.
Chelsea controlled the second half, and although Fernandez, Nkunku and Madueke missed good chances, substitute Tyrique George sealed the win late on with a long-range effort that slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said.
Enzo Maresca’s men will face Benfica in the last 16. Espérance exit at the group stage after another disappointing tournament showing.
