Tobi Amusan began her World Championships campaign in style, winning her heat in the women’s 100m hurdles to reach the semi-finals in Tokyo.
The 28-year-old Nigerian, who holds the world record in the event, crossed the line first in 12.53 seconds in heat six, booking automatic qualification.
Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton followed in 12.69s, with Italy’s Elena Carraro third in 12.86s.
Amusan’s progression keeps alive Nigeria’s hopes of a medal, as she looks to add another global honour to her résumé.
Other leading contenders, Olympic champion Masai Russell, reigning world champion Danielle Williams, Nadine Visser, Ackera Nugent and Grace Stark — also advanced comfortably from their heats.
The semi-finals and final will both take place on Tuesday, where Amusan is expected to face her toughest test.
Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Sade Olatoye fell short in the women’s hammer throw, recording 68.82m, well outside the qualification mark for the final.
