Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for a third straight time after a 1-1 draw with
Bosnia & Herzegovina, who sealed their place with a penalty shoot-out win in
Zenica.
Moise Kean gave Italy the lead after a defensive error, but the hosts responded
strongly and were handed a major boost when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off
before half-time.
Bosnia piled on the pressure and eventually equalised late on through Haris
Tabaković after a series of saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Neither side could find a winner in extra time, sending the tie to penalties, where Italy
faltered.
Sebastiano Esposito missed the opening kick, and Bryan Cristante struck the bar,
allowing Bosnia to convert confidently and secure qualification.
The result sends Bosnia to their first World Cup in 12 years, while four-time
champions Italy are left out again.
