Nigeria and China have restated their commitment to stronger bilateral cooperation during a joint celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary and China’s 76th National Day, held in Lagos on Sunday.

The colourful event, which also coincided with China’s Mid-Autumn Festival, drew diplomats, government officials, business leaders, cultural troupes, and students together in a show of unity and friendship.

Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria-China Relations, Jaafaru Yakubu, praised the Chinese Consul General in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, for her efforts in strengthening ties between both nations. He described her as a genuine partner of Nigeria, commending her role in facilitating educational scholarships, cultural exchanges, and business collaborations.

Yakubu also acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Eric Ni, Chairman of the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Association, for driving initiatives that created jobs, transferred technology, and advanced community development.

He highlighted the need for both countries to expand cooperation in renewable energy, digital innovation, healthcare, and agriculture, while urging China to broaden educational opportunities for young Nigerians.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Simon Omo-Ezomo stressed that Nigeria’s partnership with China is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises industrialisation, diversification, and job creation.

In his remarks, Dr. Ni encouraged the Chinese community in Nigeria to remain active partners in the nation’s growth, describing the joint celebration as a symbol of harmony and shared aspirations.

“This gathering reflects the strength of the relationship between our two nations—built on history, culture, and a vision for the future,” he said.

Guests were treated to dynamic performances from the Hauxing Arts Troupe, the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, overseas Chinese performers, and other cultural groups, adding colour to the evening’s festivities.
