Liverpool manager Arne Slot says it is too early to discuss a Premier League title challenge after his side’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday.
The loss was Liverpool’s fifth in the league this season, already more than they suffered in the whole of last campaign and leaves them eighth in the table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal.
“It feels like too many losses,” Slot admitted. “The last thing we should talk about now is the title race. We need to focus on getting results, one at a time, before we can even think about that.”
Liverpool came into the game buoyed by wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid but were outclassed by City, who dominated the first half.
“They were by far the better side,” Slot conceded. “Playing at the Etihad is difficult for everyone, including us.”
The Dutchman also questioned the decision to disallow Virgil van Dijk’s goal for offside interference by Andy Robertson, calling the ruling “surprising,” though he refused to use it as an excuse.
“These things didn’t help us,” Slot said. “But City being 2-0 up at half-time was a fair reflection of the game.”
