Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang produced a superb second-half burst to inspire Olympique de Marseille to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League, ending the French side’s 12-match winless run against English opposition.
Newcastle United struck early when Harvey Barnes continued his excellent form by finishing Sandro Tonali’s low delivery for his fourth goal in three games.
Marseille responded with pressure throughout the first half, but Aubameyang missed two late chances as Nick Pope and narrow margins kept the hosts out.
Just 19 seconds after the restart, Aubameyang beat Pope to a through ball and curled in a brilliant equaliser from a tight angle.
Moments later, Timothy Weah whipped in a cross that the striker poked home to complete the turnaround, marking his eighth goal in 10 meetings with Newcastle United.
The visitors pushed back, with Joe Willock forcing Gerónimo Rulli into a strong save and Harvey Barnes going close late on, but Marseille held firm to claim only their second Champions League win of the campaign.
Newcastle United stay on nine points and remain in a favourable position to reach the knockout stages despite the defeat.
