Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a 4-0 victory over Villarreal at Signal Iduna Park, securing their first triumph in four matches across all competitions and deepening the visitors’ Champions League struggles.

Villarreal threatened early when Tajon Buchanan tapped in, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Dortmund gradually grew into the contest and broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time. Daniel Svensson’s corner created chaos in the box, allowing Aaron Anselmino to flick the ball into the path of Serhou Guirassy, who nodded in from close range.

Early in the second half, a handball on the goal line by Juan Foyth handed Dortmund a penalty and Villarreal a red card after a VAR review.

Guirassy’s initial effort was saved by Luiz Junior, but he reacted quickest to bury the rebound for his second of the night.

Karim Adeyemi added Dortmund’s third soon after, benefiting from a fortunate ricochet off Thomas Partey following a sharp one-two with Julian Brandt.

Fabio Silva later struck the crossbar from the spot, but Dortmund found a fourth in stoppage time when Svensson headed in Pascal Gross’ cross.

The win moves Dortmund firmly back on track, while Villarreal remain stranded on one point from five matches and continue their poor run on German soil.
