Tanzania were denied a first-ever Africa Cup of Nations finals win as Uganda struck late to earn a 1-1 draw and keep their Group C hopes alive.

Uganda were the sharper side before the break, with Allan Okello forcing a save and Rogers Mato hitting the crossbar, while Tanzania failed to register a shot on target in the first half.

The Taifa Stars improved after the restart and took the lead when Simon Msuva converted a penalty after Baba Alhassan handled in the area.

However, Uganda’s pressure finally paid off late on, as substitute Uche Ikpeazu powered home a diving header from Denis Omedi’s cross.

There was late drama when Okello blazed a stoppage-time penalty over the bar, leaving both teams still in contention.

Tanzania’s winless run now stretches to nine matches, while Uganda will feel they missed a chance to take all three points.
