Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol will undergo surgery on a shin injury later this week, the Premier League club confirmed on Monday, dealing another blow to Pep Guardiola’s side.
The 23-year-old Croatian was substituted early in the second half of Sunday’s 1–1 home draw against Chelsea after appearing to struggle with the problem.
In a statement, City said the defender will have surgery in the coming days, with further assessments ongoing to determine the full extent of the injury and his expected recovery time.
City’s defensive concerns are mounting, with Ruben Dias also forced off through injury in the same match, while England international John Stones remains sidelined.
The absences leave Guardiola short of options at the back as the season enters a crucial phase.
