Crowd Surge Disrupts Distribution at Renewed Hope Youth Event in Owerri
A crowd surge briefly disrupted the distribution of empowerment items during the Renewed Hope South-East Youth Tour held in Owerri, the Imo State capital, as thousands of young participants gathered for the programme organised by the City Boy Movement.
Despite the incident, organisers described the two-day event as successful, citing the large turnout of youths, entrepreneurs and community leaders from across the South-East region.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the movement’s National Publicity Secretary, Emana-Amawhe Ambrose, said the initiative was designed to engage young Nigerians on governance and economic opportunities under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the organisers, the programme began with a policy summit that brought together youth leaders, business owners, policy experts and public officials to discuss issues related to governance, enterprise development and access to funding for young entrepreneurs.
The summit, they said, provided a platform for participants to explore ways young Nigerians could contribute more actively to national development and benefit from emerging economic opportunities.
Activities on the second day included an empowerment rally attended by thousands of youths who gathered to show support for the government’s development initiatives and participate in empowerment programmes aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship.
However, the distribution of empowerment items was disrupted when excitement among participants intensified and a section of the crowd surged toward the designated distribution area. Organisers said barricades set up to regulate the process were breached, allowing some participants to access the remaining items before the structured distribution exercise could be completed.
Ambrose-Amawhe said the distribution had initially begun in an orderly manner before the sudden rush occurred.
He added that the incident should not overshadow the broader objectives of the event, noting that the strong turnout reflected growing interest among young Nigerians in empowerment initiatives and policy engagement.
The City Boy Movement, a youth support group aligned with the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda, said it remains committed to programmes that promote youth participation in governance, job creation and economic development.
Observers say youth-focused initiatives have increasingly become central to Nigeria’s political and economic discourse as the country grapples with high youth unemployment and rising demand for economic opportunities.
