Bologna booked their first European quarter-final since 1998/99 after a dramatic 4-3
extra-time win over AS Roma, sealing a 5-4 aggregate triumph and extending their
unbeaten run in the competition.
Jonathan Rowe fired Bologna ahead with a stunning long-range strike before Roma
responded through Evan Ndicka.
Federico Bernardeschi restored the visitors’ lead from the penalty spot, and Santiago
Castro capitalised on a defensive error to make it 3-1 on the night.
Roma mounted a late fightback as Donyell Malen converted from the spot before
Lorenzo Pellegrini struck from distance to level the tie and force extra time.
With both sides tense, Nicolo Cambiaghi delivered the decisive moment, finishing
from close range to seal a famous victory.
Bologna now face Aston Villa in the quarterfinals, while Roma exit after another
frustrating European night.
