England’s World Cup preparations began on a frustrating note as they were held to a
1-1 draw by Uruguay at Wembley, ending their seven-game run of clean-sheet
victories.
With several key players rested, Thomas Tuchel named an experimental side that
struggled for rhythm early on, despite controlling possession for large periods.
Clear chances were scarce in the first half, with Dominic Solanke’s tame effort
comfortably dealt with by Fernando Muslera.
The game’s first major incident came after the break when Ronald Araujo escaped
punishment for a reckless challenge on Phil Foden, who was later substituted after
receiving treatment.
England thought they had found a breakthrough in the 70th minute when Dominic
Calvert-Lewin headed wide from close range after good work by Cole Palmer.
Palmer soon made amends, delivering a dangerous corner that led to Ben White
tapping home on his return to international duty.
However, late drama saw Uruguay snatch an equaliser in stoppage time after White
conceded a penalty, which Federico Valverde converted to seal the draw and hand
England their first conceded goal since June.
