ITALY REJECTS WORLD CUP REPLACEMENT TALK AMID IRAN UNCERTAINTY.
Italian authorities have firmly ruled out any possibility of the Italian national football
team stepping in for the Iran national football team at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The suggestion, reportedly raised by U.S. envoy Paolo Zampolli to Donald Trump
and FIFA president Gianni Infantino was framed as a contingency plan in case Iran
failed to participate.
However, Iran remains committed to the tournament, with FIFA insisting on its fixtures
in the United States, the event will proceed as scheduled.
Italy’s response was immediate and uncompromising. Sports Minister Andrea Abodi
stressed that World Cup qualification must be earned on the pitch, while Olympic
Committee chief Luciano Buonfiglio said accepting such a route would be offensive.
Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti described the idea as “shameful.”
Despite geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran’s participation, the team is preparing
to compete, and FIFA has reiterated that no changes to the lineup are under
consideration.
The episode adds political intrigue to the tournament build-up, but Italy’s stance
leaves no room for debate, there will be no backdoor entry.
