ADC Begins Presidential Primary Today as Atiku, Amaechi, Hayatu-Deen Battle for 2027 Ticket
The African Democratic Congress is set to begin its presidential primary election today as party members across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory prepare to decide the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 general election.
The contest is expected to feature three major aspirants — former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
Party officials confirmed that the ADC adopted the direct primary method after attempts to persuade the aspirants to agree on a consensus candidate reportedly failed.
The development marks a major moment for the opposition party, which has witnessed increased political activity following defections and coalition talks involving several prominent politicians ahead of the 2027 elections.
Although the party initially considered using an affirmation model similar to the process adopted by the Nigeria Democratic Congress, party leaders said the direct primary system was chosen to ensure wider participation and compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.
Political observers say the outcome of the primary could significantly influence opposition politics in Nigeria, especially at a time when major parties are undergoing internal restructuring and realignments.
Among the contenders, Atiku is widely viewed as the most experienced and politically established figure in the race.
The former vice president has remained one of Nigeria’s most recognisable opposition politicians for more than two decades and has contested multiple presidential elections under different political platforms.
Since his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party in late 2025, Atiku has played a central role in efforts to unite opposition figures under the ADC platform.
His political camp reportedly includes several influential politicians such as former Senate President David Mark, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Minister of Sports Bolaji Abdullahi and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal.
Analysts believe Atiku’s political structure, national visibility and financial strength could provide him with a major advantage over his rivals.
Amaechi, however, remains a formidable contender with deep political influence, particularly in the South-South and among sections of the APC political establishment where he previously played major roles.
The former Rivers governor has projected himself as a candidate capable of driving institutional reforms and strengthening governance.
Hayatu-Deen, regarded as the technocratic candidate in the race, has campaigned heavily on economic reforms, job creation and tackling insecurity.
Party stakeholders say the primary is expected to test the ADC’s internal democratic process as it positions itself as a major opposition force ahead of 2027.
Security agencies and election monitors are expected to observe the exercise closely across the country.
