Jalen Brunson produced a historic performance as the New York Knicks defeated the
San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 on Saturday to clinch their first NBA
championship in 53 years.

The star guard poured in 45 points, including 29 after halftime, dragging the Knicks
to victory after a difficult shooting start and sealing Finals MVP honours in the
process.

Brunson shot 14-of-27 from the field, added three rebounds, three assists and two
steals, setting a franchise record for the most points scored by a Knicks player in an
NBA Finals game.

New York struggled badly early on, managing just 13 points in the first quarter as
San Antonio’s defence, led by Victor Wembanyama, took control.

The Spurs raced into an early double-digit lead and carried a 43-37 advantage into
halftime.

Wembanyama starred for San Antonio with a dominant all-round display, finishing
the first half with nine points, nine rebounds and five blocks before ending the game
with a double-double.

Rookie Dylan Harper also impressed off the bench with a career-high 25 points.

But Brunson refused to let the Knickschampionship dream slip away. He scored 14
points in the third quarter before taking over in the final period, repeatedly delivering
in crucial moments as New York erased the deficit.

His three clutch free throws with under four minutes remaining gave the Knicks their
first lead since the opening minutes, and he added another key basket late on as the
hosts held firm down the stretch.

Karl-Anthony Towns fouled out in the closing stages, while the Spurs briefly
threatened through Wembanyama, Harper and Stephon Castle, but New York
maintained its composure to see out the victory.

The triumph ends one of the longest championship droughts in American
professional sports, with the Knicks lifting the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the first time
since 1973, and completing a remarkable postseason run led by their inspirational
captain Brunson.
