African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman will look to break his scoring duck against Lazio as Serie A leaders Atalanta take on the Biancocelesti at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.
Despite his stellar season, which includes 12 goals and five assists in 20 appearances, the Nigerian forward has yet to find the net in three previous encounters with Lazio. However, he did register an assist during one of those matchups.
Lookman’s performances against other Serie A heavyweights tell a different story, with four goals against Napoli and three each against Empoli and AC Milan.
After scoring in Atalanta’s 3-2 win over Empoli last weekend, the 27-year-old is eager to carry that momentum into this weekend’s clash.
“Hungrier than ever. Big win,” Lookman posted on social media following the victory, which marked Atalanta’s 10th consecutive league win, a club record.
Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini expects a tough battle against Lazio, who have been formidable at home this season, losing just once.
“Our strength lies in our energy and team spirit,” Gasperini said. “Even on off days, we believe we can win until the final whistle. That mindset makes all the difference.”
Atalanta have enjoyed relative success at the Olimpico, losing just once in their last seven visits.
A win on Saturday would see the Bergamo side end 2024 atop Serie A for the first time in their 116-year history.
Lookman’s exceptional performances this year have seen his market value soar from €30m to €55m, bolstered by a Europa League triumph, a 14th-place Ballon d’Or finish, and his crowning as Africa’s best player.
