Tribute to a Legendary Socialite: Adebisi Edionseri, ‘Cash Madam,’ Passes Away at 89

The community of Ogun State and beyond is in mourning following the passing of Chief (Mrs) Bisilola Edionseri, affectionately known as ‘Cash Madam,’ who died on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at the age of 89 after a brief illness. Her death marks the end of an era for a woman whose life was a testament to grace, philanthropy, and unwavering faith.

Born in Ibara, Ogun State, Edionseri began her remarkable journey in business at the tender age of 10, learning the ropes under the guidance of her sister in Badagry in 1945. Her entrepreneurial spirit flourished, and by 1958, she had become a prominent dealer for reputable companies such as John Holt, UAC, CFAO, and GBO, distributing a variety of goods across Nigeria. It was during this time that she earned the beloved nickname “Cash Madam,” famously bestowed upon her by the renowned musician Chief Ebenezer Obey in the 1970s.

Throughout her life, Cash Madam epitomized what it means to be a socialite and a leader within the community. She held numerous titles, including Iya Sunnah of Egbaland, Iya Oba of Joga Orile, and Iya Egbe Adinni Aiyetoro, reflecting her profound cultural influence and respect within the Yoruba community. Her legacy extends far beyond her business acumen; she was known for her kindness, generosity, and commitment to uplifting those around her.

In a statement released by her son, Dr. Adebayo Adebowale, the family expressed deep gratitude for her fulfilling life. “Her life was a shining example of grace, dignity, and unwavering faith. Princess Edionseri touched the lives of many through her wisdom and dedication to both her family and community,” he said. The family is comforted by the knowledge that she completed her earthly journey and fulfilled her purpose.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also expressed his condolences, calling her death a significant loss to both the state and the nation. Business mogul Sir Kesington Adebutu joined in mourning, praising her philanthropic efforts that touched countless lives.

As the community grapples with this monumental loss, it is essential to celebrate the remarkable life of Cash Madam. Her laughter, warmth, and the values she instilled in her family and community will continue to resonate, serving as a guiding light for future generations.
