Jannik Sinner overcame both a physical struggle and a determined Holger Rune to secure a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory and book his place in the Australian Open quarter-finals on Monday.
The 23-year-old Italian, who appeared in discomfort early in the match, fought through the challenges to claim his 18th consecutive tour-level win.
Sinner took a medical timeout in the third set but returned with renewed energy to outplay the Danish 13th seed.
Despite Rune’s efforts to capitalize on Sinner’s struggles, the top seed regained control, breaking serve at crucial moments to seal the win and match the Italian record of 10 Grand Slam quarter-final appearances.
Sinner will face either Alex de Minaur or Alex Michelsen in the next round.
