Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Nuri Sahin following their 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League, the club confirmed on Wednesday.
The defeat marked Dortmund’s fourth consecutive loss across all competitions.
In an official statement, the Bundesliga side announced Sahin’s dismissal, citing an “internal analysis of recent sporting developments” as the reason for the decision.
Dortmund, last season’s Champions League finalists, surrendered a 15th-minute lead against Bologna, conceding twice in quick succession during the second half.
Their struggles extend beyond Europe, with three straight Bundesliga defeats in 2025 leaving them 10th in the table and jeopardizing their qualification for next season’s tournament.
“After four consecutive losses and just one win in nine games, we have unfortunately lost confidence in achieving our goals under the current setup,” said managing director Lars Ricken.
“This was a tough personal decision, but after the Bologna game, it became unavoidable.”
Sahin, appointed just over six months ago to replace Edin Terzic, departs with Dortmund in a difficult position.
The former club midfielder had signed a contract until 2027 after previously serving as an assistant coach and gaining managerial experience at Turkey’s Antalyaspor.
Dortmund have yet to confirm who will take charge for their upcoming Bundesliga clash against Werder Bremen.
