Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) until 2029 after standing unopposed at the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday.

The 63-year-old South African businessman and owner of Mamelodi Sundowns first assumed office on March 12, 2021, after his rivals withdrew from the race.

Since then, African football has seen notable progress under his leadership, including increased representation in the FIFA Women’s World Cup and a boost in prize money for CAF competitions.

Financially, CAF has seen significant improvement, recording a $72 million (£55.5 million) profit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire—18 times higher than the revenue from the 2022 edition.

“I was partly taken aback by the huge insistence on continuity,” Motsepe told BBC Sport Africa in 2024. “There has been a lot of good progress, but there is still much work to be done.”

Meanwhile, Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o was elected unopposed as the Central Africa representative.

The former Barcelona and Chelsea striker, who serves as president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), was previously suspended by FIFA and CAF in 2024 for disciplinary violations related to his role as an ambassador for a betting company.

Motsepe’s continued leadership aims to build on CAF’s financial and structural reforms while addressing ongoing governance challenges within African football.
