Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has hit back at Roy Keane’s criticism, insisting that while he respects the club legend, he will continue to lead in his own way.
Keane, a former United skipper known for his no-nonsense approach, recently questioned Fernandes’ work rate during an appearance on the Stick to Football podcast.
The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder has long faced scrutiny for his on-field demeanor, including his animated gestures and vocal complaints.
Speaking to Sky Sports after United’s commanding 3-0 victory over Leicester City, where Fernandes was named Man of the Match, he addressed Keane’s remarks head-on.
“I do things in my own way,” Fernandes said. “Obviously, it’s not nice to hear those things about you, but at the same time, it motivates you. People think there’s always something to improve, and that’s fine.”
“You have to take it in a positive way. I have huge respect for Roy Keane. Obviously, not everything I do will please everyone, and I respect different opinions. But I accept that there is always room for improvement—in my game, in my leadership, and in everything I do in life.”
Fernandes’ numbers this season suggest his influence remains crucial for United. With 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions, he once again proved his worth against Leicester, scoring and providing two assists in the win.
United manager Ruben Amorim was full of praise for his captain, particularly for his consistency and resilience.
“He’s a special guy in that aspect—he is always ready, he recovers well,” Amorim said. “I always see a Bruno that is dangerous and one that can recover in every situation. So he is going to stay there.”
Despite Fernandes’ form, United remain in a disappointing 13th place in the Premier League with 37 points from 29 matches. However, with their skipper continuing to deliver, they will hope for a strong finish to the season.
