Everton have been ordered to pay £35 million in damages and interest to Burnley
after a Premier League commission ruled that a breach of financial rules contributed
to Burnley’s relegation.

The case relates to Everton’s 2021-22 season breach of profit and sustainability
regulations, with the panel concluding that the overspend had a direct sporting
impact on the relegation battle.

Burnley argued they lost their Premier League survival as a result, a position the commission said was “more compelling” based on expert evidence simulating points
outcomes.

In its ruling, the panel stated that “on the balance of probabilities, Everton’s breach of
The PSR caused Burnley to be relegated.”

Everton strongly rejected the decision and has already appealed, insisting
the ruling is “fundamentally flawed in both law and fact,” and warns that it could set a
“dangerous and unworkable precedent” for English football.

The club, owned by the Friedkin Group, argued that the judgment misrepresents
evidence and said they remain confident of overturning the decision.

The ruling marks the most significant compensation claim between clubs in the Premier
League history and could open the door for further legal action in similar cases
involving financial rule breaches.
