“I Didn’t Want to Be Someone’s Ex” — Ayra Starr Opens Up on Avoiding Dating in School

Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has revealed that she intentionally stayed away from romantic relationships during her school years in a bid to protect her reputation.

The 23-year-old Mavin Records artist made the disclosure during a recent interview with Quenlin Blackwell, where she spoke candidly about her mindset growing up.

According to the singer, she avoided dating in high school because she did not want to be identified as someone’s ex-girlfriend. She explained that she was highly self-aware and often questioned the intentions of those who showed interest in her.

“Because I didn’t want to be someone’s ex, I didn’t date in high school,” she said. “I knew a lot of guys were trying, and I was like, ‘Why are you trying? That means you must have an ulterior motive.’”

Despite the attention she received from male admirers at the time, the singer maintained her stance, choosing instead to focus on herself.

Now, the “Rush” crooner says her perspective on relationships has evolved. She noted that intelligence has become a key quality she values in a partner, placing it above physical appearance.
