Maryam Abacha American University of Niger has matriculated no fewer than 430 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, marking a significant milestone in its continued expansion and commitment to higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The institution, established in 2013 as the region’s first bilingual university, has played a key role in training both undergraduate and postgraduate students across science and humanities disciplines, while also promoting research and innovation beyond the continent.

Speaking during the matriculation ceremony held on Saturday, the Director-Campus, Shu’aibu Usman-Tanko, reminded the newly admitted students of the responsibilities ahead, urging them to adhere strictly to the institution’s rules and regulations.

“Matriculation ceremony essentially denotes the formal admission of candidates who are adjudged academically qualified, emotionally stable, and psychologically ready to cope with the rigorous challenges of academic engagement,” he said.

He further charged the students to remain focused and avoid actions that could tarnish their personal reputation and that of the university, emphasizing that the institution maintains zero tolerance for misconduct.

In separate interviews, some of the matriculated students described the university as a hub of academic excellence, highlighting its impact in shaping successful careers, particularly in the health sciences.

“MAAUN has given us the opportunity to grow. Many health science graduates from the university are now working abroad. The institution is breaking barriers and creating a more inclusive and diverse learning environment,” one student noted.

Meanwhile, the university disclosed that construction is ongoing at its permanent site located in Djiratawa, Maradi, with an estimated investment of ₦10 billion committed to the project.
