Suspected kidnappers have attacked a residential community near the Quarry area of Arab Road in Kubwa, a suburb of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, abducting one resident and fatally shooting another.

The attack reportedly occurred between 11 p.m. on Saturday and midnight on Sunday.

Residents said the gunmen stormed the area through a nearby hill, sparking a gun battle with local security operatives before invading a residential building.

A community leader identified as Dairo, who serves as secretary of the area, said residents were alerted by the sound of gunfire.

“We started hearing gunshots, and the house is towards the hill. From what I was told, because my house is not too far, the local security tried to repel them in a gun battle,” he said.

According to him, despite resistance from local vigilantes, the attackers succeeded in gaining access to the victim’s apartment.

“While they were doing that, they were able to enter the guy’s apartment. They shot him and took his younger brother away,” he added.

The injured resident was rushed to hospital but reportedly died on Sunday from gunshot wounds.

Dairo said police officers arrived shortly after the attack, but the kidnappers had already escaped with their captive.

“Before the police could come around, they had gone with the guy. They came in through the hill and went back through the hill,” he said.

The community secretary described the latest incident as the third successful kidnapping operation carried out in the area in recent years.

He recalled that during an earlier attack around 2021 or 2022, a corps member was abducted and another resident, identified as Mr. Oshodi, was killed.

He also noted that another resident was kidnapped in 2025 and later released after a ransom payment.

According to residents, suspected kidnappers had attempted to infiltrate the community only weeks earlier but were repelled by local security personnel.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over security vulnerabilities in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, particularly communities located near forests and hilly terrain often used by criminal groups as escape routes.
